Basic Pattern Drafting: Drafting Basic Bodice
Drafting a basic bodice pattern is an essential skill in garment making. A well-fitted bodice serves as the foundation for many types of clothing, from blouses to dresses. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to drafting a basic bodice pattern that can be customized for various designs.
Materials Needed
- Pattern paper (or large sheets of plain paper)
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Ruler (or straight edge)
- French curve (for shaping)
- Scissors
- Eraser
Step-by-Step Drafting Instructions
1. Take Accurate Measurements
Begin by taking the following measurements:
- Bust Circumference: Measure around the fullest part of the bust.
- Waist Circumference: Measure around the natural waistline.
- Hip Circumference: Measure around the fullest part of the hips (for longer bodice).
- Back Length: Measure from the nape of the neck to the waistline.
- Front Length: Measure from the shoulder to the waistline.
- Shoulder Width: Measure from one shoulder point to the other.
2. Prepare the Pattern Paper
- Lay your pattern paper on a flat surface.
- Draw a vertical line to represent the center back (CB) of the bodice. This will be your reference line.
3. Draft the Basic Bodice Block
- Mark the Lengths:
- From the top of the CB line, measure down the back length and mark this point as the waistline (WL).
- Measure down from the waistline to mark the hip line (if necessary).
- Bust Line:
- From the top of the CB line, measure down approximately 1/4 of the bust circumference plus ease (usually about 2 inches). Mark this point as the bust line (BL).
- Shoulder Width:
- From the top of the CB line, measure across the shoulder width to the right and draw a horizontal line to create the shoulder seam.
- Side Seam:
- Measure out from the waistline to the left, marking the side seam (SS). The width is usually about 1/2 of the bust measurement plus ease divided by 2.
4. Connect the Points
- Neckline:
- Decide on the neckline depth and shape (e.g., round, square). From the shoulder seam, measure down to create the neckline point and use a French curve to draw the neckline.
- Armhole:
- To draft the armhole, mark a point down from the shoulder seam and connect it to the bust line using the French curve to create a smooth curve.
- Waist and Hip Lines:
- Connect the bust line to the waistline and the waistline to the hip line to form the side seam. Use the French curve for a smooth transition.
5. Add Seam Allowances
- Add seam allowances (typically 1/4 to 1/2 inch) around the neckline, armholes, and side seams. This is important for sewing the bodice together.
6. Cut Out the Pattern
- Carefully cut along the outer lines of your drafted bodice pattern. Ensure all points and lines are clearly marked for reference.
7. Label the Pattern
- Clearly label the pattern with relevant information, including:
- Pattern piece (e.g., “Front Bodice”)
- Size
- Grainline (indicating the direction of the fabric)
- Seam allowances
- Notches for alignment during sewing
