Jesus Calls His First Four Disciples
Jesus began His ministry by calling people to follow Him and become His disciples. The first four men He called were Simon Peter, his brother Andrew, and the two brothers James and John. These men were fishermen by profession.
One day, as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Peter and Andrew casting their nets into the water. He called to them, saying, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Without hesitation, they left their nets and followed Jesus (Matthew 4:18-20).
A little farther down the shore, Jesus saw James and John in a boat with their father, Zebedee. They were mending their nets. Jesus called them too, and immediately, they left their father and the boat to follow Him (Matthew 4:21-22).
Meaning of “Fishers of Men”
When Jesus told Peter and Andrew that He would make them “fishers of men,” He was using their profession as a metaphor. Just as they were catching fish, Jesus wanted them to “catch” people by sharing the message of God’s kingdom and bringing others to follow Him.
Response to Jesus’ Call
The four disciples responded immediately to Jesus’ call. They left behind their jobs and families to follow Him. This shows the importance of obedience and faith in the Christian life. When Jesus calls, He asks for a complete commitment, just as the first four disciples demonstrated.
Lessons from the Call of the Disciples
- Obedience: Peter, Andrew, James, and John obeyed Jesus without asking questions. This teaches us the importance of obeying God’s call in our lives.
- Faith: They had faith in Jesus even though they didn’t know what the future held. Their trust in Him is an example of the faith Christians are called to have.
- Commitment: The disciples left everything behind to follow Jesus. This shows that following Jesus requires dedication and putting Him first in our lives.
