Lesson Plan for Primary Three (First Term)
Subject: Basic Science
Class: Primary Three
Week of the First Term: 8th Week
Topic: Forms of Technology
Sub-Topic: Underdeveloped Technology, Characteristics and Examples
Instructional Objectives
At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Define underdeveloped technology and list its key characteristics.
- Identify and describe at least three examples of underdeveloped technology.
- Explain the importance and uses of underdeveloped technology in daily life.
Entry Behaviour
Pupils should already know the basic concept of technology and some examples of modern technology they see around them.
Instructional Materials
- Textbook
- Visual aids and charts showing examples of underdeveloped technology
- Flashcards with images of different technological tools

Content: Forms of Technology
- Underdeveloped Technology:
Refers to simple tools and methods used in the past, characterized by manual operations, simplicity, and lack of advanced machinery.
Characteristics of Underdeveloped Technology
- Manual Operation
Many underdeveloped technologies require manual effort to operate. Examples: Hand-cranked water pumps, manual typewriters, and wind-up clocks.
- Limited Efficiency
These technologies often take more time and effort to achieve tasks compared to modern alternatives. Examples: Washing clothes by hand versus using a washing machine, drawing water from a well versus using an electric pump.
- Basic Functionality
Underdeveloped technologies often perform basic functions without the advanced features of modern devices. Examples: Early telephones that could only make voice calls versus smartphones that can browse the internet, take pictures, and play games.
- Reliance on Simple Mechanisms
They use simple mechanical parts rather than complex electronics. Examples: Wind-up toys, bicycles without gears, and mechanical scales.
- Durability and Longevity
These technologies are often built to last and can be repaired easily. Examples: Cast iron stoves, metal tools, and hand-sewn clothing.
Examples of Underdeveloped Technology
1. Communication
- Telegraph: A device used to send messages using Morse code.
- Rotary Phone: Old phones with a circular dial used to make calls.
2. Transportation
- Horse-Drawn Carriages: Vehicles pulled by horses before cars were invented.
- Old Bicycles: Bicycles without gears or modern safety features.
3. Household Appliances
- Hand-Cranked Washing Machines: Machines where people had to turn a handle to wash clothes.
- Iceboxes: Early refrigerators that used blocks of ice to keep food cold.
4. Tools and Equipment
- Manual Typewriters: Machines for typing text without electricity.
- Mechanical Scales: Scales that use springs and levers to measure weight.
5. Lighting
- Oil Lamps: Lamps that burn oil to produce light.
- Candles: Used for lighting before electric bulbs were invented.
