Week One
Subject: Basic Science
Class: Primary Three
Week of the First Term: 1st Week
Topic: Measurement of Length
Sub-Topic: Meaning and Instrument of Measuring Length
Instructional Objectives
At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
Define length and identify it as a measurable attribute.
Name at least three instruments used to measure length, such as a ruler, measuring tape, and meter stick.
Demonstrate how to measure objects using a ruler with accuracy.
Entry Behaviour
Pupils should already know basic concepts of size and comparison (e.g., big vs. small, long vs. short).
Instructional Materials
1. Textbook
2. Rulers, measuring tapes, meter sticks
3. Visual aids and charts

Content
Introduction
Length is the measurement of something from one end to the other.
Body
Instruments of Measuring Length
Ruler: Used to measure shorter lengths, typically up to 30 centimeters or 12 inches
Tape Measure: Useful for measuring longer lengths and curved surfaces. Commonly used in sewing, construction, and other fields
Meter Stick: Used for measuring longer lengths than a standard ruler can accommodate.
Measuring Tape: Used in various fields, including tailoring, carpentry, and construction
Yardstick: Used primarily in the United States for measuring lengths in yards, feet, and inches.
Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)
Step 1: Introduction
Begin with a story about two children who want to know who has the longer pencil. Ask pupils how they think the children can find out.
Step 2: Explanation
Explain that length is the measurement of how long something is from one end to the other. Use simple language and show examples of different objects with varying lengths.
Step 3: Demonstration
Show pupils a ruler, measuring tape, and meter stick. Demonstrate how to use each instrument to measure the length of a pencil, a book, and the classroom door.
Step 4: Guided Practice
Hand out rulers to pupils and guide them in measuring the length of their pencils and notebooks. Provide assistance as needed.
Step 5: Independent Practice
Have pupils measure the length of various objects in the classroom independently, such as their desks, a textbook, and a piece of string.
Step 6: Feedback
Review the measurements taken by pupils. Correct any errors and reinforce the correct usage of the measuring instruments.
Evaluation
Formative Assessment: Observe pupils during guided and independent practice to ensure they are using the measuring instruments correctly.
Summative Assessment: At the end of the lesson, provide a worksheet where pupils must measure the length of drawn objects and record their measurements accurately.
Summary/Conclusion
Recap the meaning of length and the names of the instruments used to measure length. Emphasize the importance of accuracy when measuring. Answer any remaining questions from pupils.
Assignment
Mention the Instruments of Measuring Length
