Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define perspective drawing and explain its significance in representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface.
- Describe the concept of one-point perspective and demonstrate its application in drawing simple objects.
- Create a one-point perspective drawing of a given object, accurately depicting depth and spatial relationships.
Entry Behaviour
Students should have prior knowledge of basic geometric shapes and an understanding of how to use drawing tools such as rulers and pencils.

Perspective Drawing
Definition
Perspective drawing is a technique used to represent three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface, creating an illusion of depth and space. This method allows artists and designers to depict how objects appear to the human eye, considering factors such as distance and vanishing points. By using perspective, the drawing provides a more realistic view of the object or scene, enhancing its visual appeal and accuracy.

One Point Perspective
Definition: One point perspective is a type of perspective drawing where all parallel lines converge at a single vanishing point on the horizon line. This technique is often used when drawing objects that face the viewer directly, such as a road, railway, or building front.
Key Features of One Point Perspective:
- Vanishing Point: This is the point on the horizon line where parallel lines appear to converge. It represents the viewer’s eye level and can be positioned anywhere along the horizon line.
- Horizon Line: The horizon line represents the viewer’s eye level. It separates the sky from the ground in the drawing and can be adjusted based on the perspective desired.
- Orthogonal Lines: These are the lines that lead to the vanishing point, helping to create the illusion of depth. They represent the edges of objects receding into space.
Construction of One Point Perspective:
- Draw the Horizon Line: Start by drawing a horizontal line across the page, which will represent the horizon line at eye level.
- Establish the Vanishing Point: Mark a point on the horizon line where all lines will converge; this is the vanishing point.
- Draw the Object: Begin drawing the front face of the object, making sure it is directly facing the viewer.
- Create Orthogonal Lines: From the corners of the front face, draw lines that extend towards the vanishing point. These lines should represent the depth of the object.
- Complete the Object: Determine the depth you want for the object by choosing where to stop the orthogonal lines, then draw vertical and horizontal lines to close the shape.
- Add Details: Add details, shading, and textures to enhance the realism of the drawing.
Example Applications
- Architectural Drawings: One point perspective is frequently used in architectural renderings to present buildings and rooms, providing a clear view of how space will be experienced.
- Interior Design: It helps in visualizing room layouts and furniture arrangements from a specific viewpoint.
- Illustrations and Art: Artists use this technique to depict scenes with a clear focus, creating a compelling focal point that draws the viewer’s eye..
