Subtopic 2: Common Sewing Tools (e.g., tape measure, scissors, pins, needles)
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Identify and name at least five different types of sewing tools and their uses.
- Demonstrate the correct use of basic sewing tools (e.g., measuring with a tape measure, cutting with scissors).
- Explain the importance of caring for sewing tools and equipment to ensure their longevity.
Entry Behaviour
Pupils should already know the basic functions of common household tools and have a general understanding of sewing as a skill.

Types and Uses of Simple Sewing Tools and Equipment
Sewing is a valuable skill that requires various tools and equipment to facilitate the process. Understanding these tools and their specific uses is essential for anyone interested in sewing, knitting, or crocheting.
Identification of Sewing Tools and Equipment
- Tape Measure
- A flexible measuring tape, typically made of cloth or plastic, that can be rolled up for easy storage.
- Use: Used to measure fabric and body dimensions accurately. It is essential for ensuring that patterns fit correctly and that items are constructed to the desired size.
- Scissors
- A cutting tool with two blades that pivot to cut through fabric and thread.
- Use: Different types of scissors are used for various purposes. Fabric scissors are designed for cutting fabric, while thread snips are smaller scissors used for trimming threads. Pinking shears are used to cut fabric edges to prevent fraying.
- Pins
- Small, pointed metal or plastic pieces with a sharp end and a rounded head.
- Use: Pins are used to hold fabric pieces together before sewing, helping to keep layers aligned. They can also be used to secure patterns to fabric while cutting.
- Needles
- Thin, pointed tools with an eye (the hole) for threading. Needles come in various sizes and types.
- Use: Needles are used for hand sewing and machine sewing. Hand sewing needles can be straight or curved, while machine needles are designed to fit specific sewing machines. Each type is suitable for different fabrics and stitching techniques.
- Thread
- A long, thin strand of fiber, typically made of cotton, polyester, or a blend, used for sewing.
- Use: Thread is used to stitch fabric pieces together. Different colors and types of thread can be chosen based on the fabric and the desired outcome.
- Sewing Machine
- An electric or mechanical device that stitches fabric together using a needle and thread.
- Use: A sewing machine significantly speeds up the sewing process and allows for more complex stitching patterns compared to hand sewing. Various attachments can expand its capabilities, including zigzag stitching, buttonholing, and quilting.
- Iron and Ironing Board
- An electric appliance that uses heat and steam to remove wrinkles from fabric, and an adjustable board on which fabric can be pressed.
- Use: Pressing seams and fabric before and after sewing helps to ensure neat and professional-looking results. Ironing is essential for achieving accuracy in sewing.
- Fabric Chalk or Marking Pens
- Tools used to make temporary marks on fabric.
- Use: Fabric chalk or pens are used to mark patterns, seam lines, or alterations on fabric without leaving permanent marks. They can be easily removed with water or heat.
- Seam Ripper
- A small tool with a pointed end and a blade that can cut threads.
- Use: A seam ripper is used to remove stitches and undo mistakes in sewing. It is an essential tool for correcting errors without damaging the fabric.
- Rotary Cutter and Mat
- A circular blade attached to a handle for cutting fabric, used with a self-healing cutting mat.
- Use: Rotary cutters are great for making precise cuts in multiple layers of fabric, especially in quilting. The cutting mat protects surfaces and extends the life of the blade.
